PHILADELPHIA, PA – After narrowly advancing to the quarterfinals, Montréal fell to Victoria 253-99 in a defensively tough but exciting match up. Victoria controlled the game from the outset but Montréal had their own shining moments. Victoria remained disciplined and cohesive throughout the game, relying on their signature defense and trusted their jammers to navigate the pack with little assistance.

Montréal struggled to adapt to a different style of play than they faced in their previous game. They were often slow to change from offense to defense, or from regular pack play to a power jam–hesitations that hindered them from fully taking advantage of the few situations where Victoria was vulnerable.

EUGENE, OR– Day 2 at The Big O tested the accuracy of the March WFTDA rankings as the # 2 ranked Victorian Roller Derby League took on the reining WFTDA Champions, #4 Rose City Wheels of Justice for an ESPN3 broadcast. The last time these two played each other was at the 2014 D1 Playoffs in Charleston, WV, where Rose City won by a commanding lead 236-96.

Continuing what was a penalty heavy weekend at the Big O, each team saw a key jammer foul out of the game, as well as already missing top scorers from each of their rotations all weekend long. Victoria won the exciting and chaotic match up, 150-138, replacing Gotham as the #1 ranked team on Flat Track Stats.

To kick off a new series called “Off-Track Banter”, we caught up with the Australian power blocker to find out how Scar got into roller derby, what she does when off the track and some perspective on Victoria’s ascent in the world’s fastest-growing sport.

TUCSON, AZ – The two top seeds of the Division 1 Tucson bracket met up for the final game on Sunday, and after the first quarter of the game stayed fairly close, #1 Victorian Roller Derby League pulled away from #2 B.ay A.rea D.erby Girls. With only 39 jams in this game, the second half saw long, laborious jams once both teams got ahold of some of their penalties. But Victoria dominated lead calls in a low scoring second half.

Despite a tighter jammer rotation, more penalties, and a short bench, Victoria still held on tightly with their braced defense, taking 1st place in the first D1 weekend, 151-107.
