MADISON, WI – The #8 seed Windy City took on #5 seed Team United, both aiming for a spot in the 5th place game on Sunday. Though the teams have never met in sanctioned play, a regulation pairing of the teams in early August left United up 216 points, which may well have given a solid indicator of the potential for play. Windy’s pushes just couldn’t ultimately get through the United defensive walls, and they grabbed up a 197-82 victory to move on to the 5th placer tomorrow.

MADISON, WI – A fast-paced game saw the #5 seed, Team United Roller Derby, claiming the win over #7 seed No Coast Derby Girls, 246-147. Despite repeated shifts in momentum between the two teams and penalty trouble for blockers on both teams, Team United built up a comfortable lead on the strength of high scoring jams from a well-balanced jammer rotation.

MADISON, WI – #5 Team United (#17 in WFTDA) has demonstrated their hunger to be a Top 20 team for the last two years. #4 Tampa (#15 in WFTDA) have been ‘playing the long game’ developing their league from the bottom up and creating a culture of excellence, which has shown in their gradual climb up the rankings in the past few years. (It would be a good time to note that Tampa’s B-Team will be debuting at the B-Team Championships in 2 weeks as the #4 seed as well).

The final 2016 International WFTDA Playoff tournament is taking place this weekend, September 23rd-25th in Madison, Wisconsin and will be hosted by the Mad Rollin’ Dolls. This bracket will decide the final three Division 1 teams that will join London, Texas, Montréal, Rose City, Denver, Jacksonville, Victoria, Angel City, and Rat City in Portland, Oregon this November for Championships. After the award ceremony on Sunday, WFTDA will also announce seeding for the Champs bracket.

Hosted by a long time WFTDA member and former North Central regional team, the teams attending feel like a Midwest throwback with the addition of Gotham, Tampa, and Helsinki. The hive mind comes in as a strong contender for 1st place, but it will be interesting to see where things shake out for some closely matched teams after that.
