SEATTLE, WA – The first consolation game of the Seattle playoffs saw Tampa Roller Derby coming against Windy City Rollers. Tampa suffered a hard loss against Angel City on Friday night, while Windy had fallen to 2×4’s Team Osom in their first game of the weekend.

While the game played tight and tense through the first half, penalties ultimately got the best of Windy City, despite strong recycling and they could not stem the tide of Tampa Bay, who took the game 222-150.

SEATTLE, WA – The quarter finals started off with #2 Angel City facing #7 Tampa Roller Derby. The new playoff structure makes it very easy for the 1-4 seeds to get into championships, having to now only win one game to a significantly lower see to earn a berth. Though Tampa-sized, the flamingos of Florida were not going to let the Sequoias win without a valiant fight.

The odds were high in Angel’s favor. Their season has been stacked with difficult opponents and they’ve only fallen to Rose City and Victoria. Tampa has been finding their groove this season. A 3-point loss to Rat City at Tiny Tourney was followed by larger losses to Philly and Montreal. Since last playoffs, eight players have been moved up from the Tampa Bruise Crew, their B-team. Angel is known for their brutalizing defense, and Tampa is known for controlled gameplay; the divergent approaches to the game made it an interesting match-up to watch.

The first game of the WFTDA Division 1 Playoffs was between the #7 seed Tampa and #10 seed Ann Arbor. The Tampa Tantrums dominated this game from start to finish with 62% lead status overall along with Winters and Smooth Operator getting 76 and 75 points respectively out of a five jammer rotation.

The Ann Arbor Brawlstars never quit and were able to find more scoring momentum, but their transitional game between offense and defense hurt them. Unable to fully capitalize on power jam opportunities, Ann Arbor lost to Tampa 280-99.

September 1st through the 3rd will kick off the Division 1 portion of WFTDA Tournament season in Seattle, Washington, hosted by the Rat City Rollergirls. After the massive 30-game tournament that was Division 2 two weeks ago, this weekend will conclude after 16 games played by 12 teams. While overall D1 was reduced to three brackets, each was expanded by two more teams which will mean that some teams will only end up playing two games this year.

While perhaps a little more predictable, Division 1 tournaments consist of the top teams in WFTDA, and as the sport grows, there’s always room for surprises. This year, the top four teams will make it out of the weekend alive and attend Championships this November in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Watch this tournament on WFTDA.tv and follow our coverage here on our website, or on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
