LANSING, MI – To get to the 7th Place game, #2 seed Sac City took two upset losses to #7 Charlottesville and #9 Tri-City, while #4 Cincinnati had a tougher path through one win and two losses. Both teams had spent the weekend playing physical, penalty-heavy games, which kept them from playing cohesively. A momentum upswing for Sac City in the second half put them ahead and took them to victory over Cincinnati, 220-174.

LANSING, MI – In the quest for a spot in the fifth place game at the D2 tournament in Michigan, WFTDA #59 ranked Tri-City took on the #44 ranked Sac City in one of the most loosely played games of the day. If you were looking for a beautiful ‘pagoda that perpetually populates penalties’, as directly quoted from announcer Lightning Slim, then you would have been in the right place. The #2 seed fell to the #9 seed, adding to the tournament’s growing list of upsets with Tri-City on top, 223 to 164.

Charlottesville dominated the overall play of the game and took every advantage #2 seeded Sac City offered, resulting in the first upset of the weekend 247-163.

The first round of 2016’s WFTDA Playoff games took place last weekend in Wichita, Kansas, and lived up to the tournament’s Division 2 history of exciting upsets and results. By the end of the weekend, after entering as the #4 seed, Brandywine took 1st place over the #7 seed, Blue Ridge, who ended up leaving the tournament with 2nd.

This coming weekend, in Lansing, MI, will include the first two of five teams that are new to Playoffs this year, a couple who have risen high enough to make a return, a few teams who dropped out of Division 1 since last year.

Overall, many of the teams experienced inconsistent results this year which makes the whole bracket a bit tough to predict, but all the more exciting for seedings upset potential ahead. The top two finishers will join Brandywine and Blue Ridge in Portland, OR, at Championships this November to decide the ultimate placement of the top four Division 2 teams.
