PHILADELPHIA, PA – At the Division 1 Playoff in Seattle, #4 Angel City met #18 Rat City and took an 82 point victory. While the last time Rat City took a win against Angel City, it was in Portland at the 2016 Hometown Throwdown and only by a slim 6 point margin, so the skaters from Seattle knew they had their work ahead of them to beat the odds.

In a game that many people believed was going to be a runaway victory for Angel City, but Rat was able to keep composed for most of the game, finally losing a grasp on their control and losing to the Hollywood Scarlets, 219-94.

PHILADELPHIA, PA – Rat City Roller Girls (#18 in WFTDA) came into Championships after a hard loss to Montréal in the bronze medal game in Seattle. That weekend they played four games highlighted by a 16-point upset against Jacksonville. Regrouped and calm, they hoped to overpower another strong top ten team, this time against the #6 Texas Rollergirls. The Texecutioners prevailed, however, and took a 254-128 win.

SEATTLE, WA – These two west coast teams have met six times in the past with a 3-3 split result. The last time they played was at Division 1 Playoffs last year in Vancouver where Angel City beat Rat City 256-64. This weekend, Rat City had the benefit of being the home team and showed some firepower already this weekend when they took down #3 seed Jacksonville by 16 points.

This was an aggressive, well-matched game with both teams playing explosive offense and blockers who had key knockouts at the right moment. Despite picking up 15 more total penalties, their ability to reform and quickly change from offense to defense gave Angel City the edge they needed to defeat Rat City 224-142.

SEATTLE, WA – Home turf advantage seemed to rule the day, as the #6 seeded Rat City overcame a feisty #11 seed Mad Rollin’ Dolls in the second game of the first day of Division 1 WFTDA playoffs in the Emerald City. Rat City was fighting to carve out a shot at working their way up the bracket in search of a medal, while Madison seemed initially hell bent on furthering their reputation as bracket busters.

September 1st through the 3rd will kick off the Division 1 portion of WFTDA Tournament season in Seattle, Washington, hosted by the Rat City Rollergirls. After the massive 30-game tournament that was Division 2 two weeks ago, this weekend will conclude after 16 games played by 12 teams. While overall D1 was reduced to three brackets, each was expanded by two more teams which will mean that some teams will only end up playing two games this year.

While perhaps a little more predictable, Division 1 tournaments consist of the top teams in WFTDA, and as the sport grows, there’s always room for surprises. This year, the top four teams will make it out of the weekend alive and attend Championships this November in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Watch this tournament on WFTDA.tv and follow our coverage here on our website, or on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
