VANCOUVER, CA – The first game of Sunday morning brought together the #6 seed Naptown Roller Girls against Arizona Roller Derby. The Arizona Tent City Terrors were fighting to improve their tenth place entry to Vancouver, while the Tornado Sirens fought to stop the slide from their six place start.

While the teams hadn’t met since Skate to Thrill in April 2015, that battle had come out 262-115 in favor of the Terrors which seemed a fairly reasonable predictor of this game, ultimately. Strong recycling and blazing fast lateral jammer skills would propel Arizona to a repeat 197-142, as they secured a 9th place exit from the tournament.

This coming weekend in Vancouver will be a bracket full of teams who have their eyes on the prize: the top three exit spots. Yes, that could be said of every tournament weekend, but this particular playoff has a number of teams that are particularly motivated to make it to the top.

Hosts, Terminal City, will be looking to prove themselves to their home fans. Stockholm is going to want to represent Europe in the top 12. Victoria is likely to be interested in both validating their epic travel miles by earning a bye into the Champs bracket, and prove that their WFTDA #2 ranking is no joke. Philly will be wanting to return to Champs after missing out on a trip last year for the first time in the history of WFTDA play. And #4 seed Rat City is going to want to prove that they can repeat their win earlier in the year against #2 Angel City, while ACDG is looking to show that that was a fluke game.

In fact, all of the teams involved will have fires lit under them. This should be an interesting weekend. May we live in interesting times.

February WFTDA Rankings and Beyond

The WFTDA posted their February 29th rankings. This month shows no movement in teams 1-39, but that won’t be the case by the end of the month as many teams are kicking off the start of the season with a tournament. Leagues are slowly coming out of the ‘off season’ or wrapping up their home team season, so there have yet to be many competitive, sanctioned games to really have an impact on the rankings.

The last we saw about WFTDA rankings it was November 30th and we were just cooling off from the excitement of Championships in St. Paul. Let’s take a look at who is already causing a stir in 2016, and what sanctioned events are on the horizon to mix things up further.
