MALMÖ, SWEDEN– The first Division 1 WFTDA tournament to take place outside North America happened in Sweden over the weekend with 6 teams playing 10 games over 2 days. With teams ranked #3 – #33 there were bound to be some blowouts, but there were also some rankings upsets and exciting matchups. With London leading the derby scene in Europe, they finished the weekend with four wins while experimenting with some different lineups, but the rest of the teams shook up the rankings a bit.

The first WFTDA-recognized tournament for 2016 will be held this weekend in Malmö, Sweden, hosted by the Crime City Rollers. The top 5 European teams, plus visitors Detroit, will play over March 5th and 6th in a first-of-its-kind tournament outside of North America: all of the teams involved attended Division 1 WFTDA tournaments last year and currently sit in the top 40 of the rankings.

Until recently, London hadn’t sanctioned a game with another European team since 2012, so this tournament is in itself a strong testament to the rising level of talent outside of the USA. Read on for a brief look at each team and how and when you can watch the games if you’re in a different time zone.

The WFTDA had released its first rankings update since Championships, and as of November 30th, 2015 it’s not really surprising that Gotham is still #1 even though they suffered their first loss in 5 years at the hands of Rose City. Since a team’s ranking is comprised of an average of points earned from 12 months of games, things can take awhile to change as more games are played. (For more information, go here for the rankings white papers.)

Here are some highlights of where things lay now in the top 100 ranked teams compared to January.

JACKSONVILLE, FL- Considering at the beginning of the calendar year, Glasgow and Pikes Peak found themselves positioned within the WFTDA’s hierarchy at #73 and #93, respectively. Nine months later, and now entrenched in the governing body’s Top 40, both wanted to end their breakthrough seasons on a high note at the Jacksonville playoff’s ninth place game on Sunday morning.

Propelled by a high-octane offense, aided by eight second period power jams, the seventh-seeded Irn Bruisers (#26) topped Pikes Peak (#36), 247-153, to claim ninth place in its inaugural WFTDA playoff trek and finish the season 4-3. The ninth-seeded Derby Dames, making its first post-season appearance since 2009, concluded the season 5-4 with the 94-point setback.
