February WFTDA Rankings and Beyond

The WFTDA posted their February 29th rankings. This month shows no movement in teams 1-39, but that won’t be the case by the end of the month as many teams are kicking off the start of the season with a tournament. Leagues are slowly coming out of the ‘off season’ or wrapping up their home team season, so there have yet to be many competitive, sanctioned games to really have an impact on the rankings.

The last we saw about WFTDA rankings it was November 30th and we were just cooling off from the excitement of Championships in St. Paul. Let’s take a look at who is already causing a stir in 2016, and what sanctioned events are on the horizon to mix things up further.

The WFTDA had released its first rankings update since Championships, and as of November 30th, 2015 it’s not really surprising that Gotham is still #1 even though they suffered their first loss in 5 years at the hands of Rose City. Since a team’s ranking is comprised of an average of points earned from 12 months of games, things can take awhile to change as more games are played. (For more information, go here for the rankings white papers.)

Here are some highlights of where things lay now in the top 100 ranked teams compared to January.

DETROIT, MI – Sunday’s noon match-up pitted #3 seed Emerald City against #8 Sac City, as both teams gathered on the track to face off in the battle for 7th place in the weekend’s tournament. Both competitors arrived to the game with one win and two losses apiece. Emerald City surely held out hope to redeem themselves after losing out to two lower-seeded teams earlier in the weekend, yet despite their efforts, they did not capitalize upon power jam opportunities in the same way Sac City managed to do, ultimately bringing home an 8th place finish after Sac City sealed the score at 199-184.

DETROIT,MI—Yesterday #9 Brewcity took on #8 Sac City in what started as a close game, and then Sac City pulled away in the second half to beat them by 69 points. Today, #3 Emerald suffered penalty problems in the first half, allowing Brewcity to take the lead for about a quarter of the game, but Emerald City came together to finish on top by 128 points. In the end, Emerald’s strong defense is what saved their game, and Brewcity’s inconsistencies knocked them into the 9th place game for tomorrow with a score of 279-151.
