In the battle for 11th place, #11 Columbia QuadSquad faced off with #9 No Coast Derby Girls in a game that can only be described as whiplash-inducing. From the start, both teams exchanged lead repeatedly through the duration of the game, sometimes multiple times in the same jam. It was unclear who would take this fierce, penalty-heavy game as these teams were extraordinarily evenly matched. This was the case through the very last jam, but Columbia ultimately clinched victory, winning 167-156.

In a nail-biter of a game, #10 seed Pirate City took on #14 seed Bear City. Both teams were coming off of losses yesterday and came out of the gate looking to clench today’s victory.

While Bear City held lead for the majority of game, Pirate gave them a run for their money, slowly closing the lead a bit at a time until the game was tied at 241 when the game clock expired. However, in the overtime jam, a trip to the penalty box for Pirate City allowed Bear City to collect points, ultimately winning 275-253. Bear City will play E-Ville later this evening at 6:30pm EDT

Following an early lead from #13 Treasure Valley, and a subsequent back-and-forth battle for control of the game, a blistering 73-18 run from Ohio to finish out the half sent their Idaho-based opponents home empty-handed.

A trio of powerful jamming performances from Gorges Curves, Val Holla and Pain Train further extended Ohio’s lead in the second half to give them the win, 220-113. They emerged with a berth against #5 Oklahoma, and a guarantee that they’ll finish out the weekend without dropping below a #10 exit.

#15 seed, E-Ville Roller Derby out of Edmonton, Canada faced off for the first time at WFTDA International Playoff at 230pm on Friday against an old standard of the WFTDA: #2 seeded Tucson Roller Derby. E-Ville made their debut thanks to a strong showing at Mayhem Tournament, where their fast game and unapologetic blocking dominated the bracketed tournament. In the end, experience seemed to triumph, as Tucson took the game 250-149.

Not showing a hint of jet lag were the two Europeans, in the game between Paris Rollergirls (#3) and Bear City Roller Derby (#14). Bear City was hoping to pull a Dublin and up-end their significantly higher-ranked opponent.

This was the first time Paris took the track at a WFTDA International Playoff, but Bear City has been known as the Comeback Champions in past years. If there is anything the world has learned about Bear City, it’s not to count them out.
