PORTLAND, OR – The 2016 D2 Championship featured a rematch from Playoffs of #43 Blue Ridge against #50 Brandywine, in a game that would be decided by penalties, and result in an eventual strong win by the hands of Blue Ridge. Despite a strong start by Brandywine, Blue Ridge asserted control after several power jams in the first half of the initial period to open the door for multiple-scoring pass jams to take and keep the lead.

The turning point of the period was a 16-0 jam posted by D2 tournament MVP Dr. Octopushy for Blue Ridge, on a boxed Lurz Lemon from Brandywine to take the lead by one point and not relinquish it for the duration of the contest. While Brandywine demonstrated a staunch defense, ultimately they had to dig deep into their jamming rotation after primary jammer Lurz Lemon was ejected after an egregious low block 20 minutes into the game.

PORTLAND, OR – With floor conditions troubling both teams in the initial minutes of play, both teams seemed to find their ground relatively rapidly in the first period. Jammer penalties took a solid hold through the middle of the first period of play, but lead jammer statuses were the main determiner of scoring abilities, and both teams used those to repeatedly trade game lead through the first half of play.

By the time the second half rolled around, Charlottesville had widened their differential to a point at which they seemed like they might not be beatable. But roller derby isn’t a game where very many differentials are invulnerable, and Brandywine proved as much by quietly adding in points and pushing deliberately up, minimizing the effect of jammer penalties. By the final jam, Brandywine had strategically used their time-outs and official review enough to hand themselves the space to take the final jammer lead and walk themselves into a comfortable 5 point lead by the end of the game to win 205-200.

The 2016 WFTDA Championships in Portland, Oregon will kick off with the Division 2 portion of the weekend, which consists of the top two teams from both D2 Playoff brackets. The first place winners of each Playoff tournament will take on the second place finishers of the opposite bracket and the winners will advance to the Championship game on Sunday while the other two teams will play for third place.

The first D2 match up will be between Brandywine Roller Derby and the Charlottesville Derby Dames, both making their first trip to WFTDA Champs. Brandywine has been competing in Division 2 Playoffs since 2014, entering their first two seasons as a #10 seed, and then getting a #4 spot this year. Charlottesville qualified for Playoffs the first time as a #10 seed in Division 1 last year, and then as a #7 seed in Division 2 this season. This matchup will bring together a disciplined Brandywine, who sticks to a strict jammer rotation, and a more relaxed Charlottesville squad that can throw nearly anyone in the star.

WICHITA, KS – As a team who started at the bottom of the D2 bracket the past two seasons, Brandywine’s #4 seed this year into this playoff tournament put them in the prime position to fight their way all the way to the top. Against the #1 seed they proved their defensive game heartily, but showed some weakness in their penalty count.

Jet City, however, knew how to attack when the time was right, but their slow start in the first half dug them a hole they couldn’t get out of in the final minutes of play. With a score of 198-170, Brandywine upset Jet City on day 2 for a place in the Championship game on Sunday.

WICHITA, KS – In a game between the closest-ranked seeds of the bracket, it was a tough, aggressive battle when #4 seed Brandywine took on #5 Kansas City.

While the first half was a slow, dense fight for the jammers; play opened up in the second half and Brandywine continued to pull away and control Kansas City with agile jamming.
