PHILADELPHIA, PA – The BELIEVANCE of the #6-ranked Texas Rollergirls woke up early to take on the legends of the #3 Gotham Girls Roller Derby. The last time these two teams faced off was in June of 2016 at Thin Air Throwdown, where Gotham won by 117 points. They have not met in the post season since Champs 2014.

In a game with eight lead changes, Gotham’s tenacity at Texas’s persistence was more eye-opening at 10AM than a red-eye coffee; Gotham squeaked out the win 148-145.

PHILADELPHIA, PA – After narrowly advancing to the quarterfinals, Montréal fell to Victoria 253-99 in a defensively tough but exciting match up. Victoria controlled the game from the outset but Montréal had their own shining moments. Victoria remained disciplined and cohesive throughout the game, relying on their signature defense and trusted their jammers to navigate the pack with little assistance.

Montréal struggled to adapt to a different style of play than they faced in their previous game. They were often slow to change from offense to defense, or from regular pack play to a power jam–hesitations that hindered them from fully taking advantage of the few situations where Victoria was vulnerable.

PHILADELPHIA, PA – Rat City Roller Girls (#18 in WFTDA) came into Championships after a hard loss to Montréal in the bronze medal game in Seattle. That weekend they played four games highlighted by a 16-point upset against Jacksonville. Regrouped and calm, they hoped to overpower another strong top ten team, this time against the #6 Texas Rollergirls. The Texecutioners prevailed, however, and took a 254-128 win.

PHILADELPHIA, PA – Game 3 ended up a bit more lopsided than the rankings would have anticipated as #7 Arch Rival sought to avenge last year’s 197-94 Championship loss to now #8 London Brawling. ARCH’s 72.2 lead jammer percentage gave them a strong head start to lead 110-38 going into halftime. Both teams used up to five jammers but had to shorten their rotations due to different reasons.

Arch Rival got fewer penalties in the whole game than London did in the first half, which helped them maintain control of the game from start to finish. They did a good job taming Rogue Runner’s footwork, keeping her to just 14 points overall, eventually leading to a St. Louis victory, 225-82.

PHILADELPHIA, PA – The second game of the 2017 International WFTDA Championships promised to be, if nothing else, nothing less than brutal with their slow and grinding play. Both Angel City (#4) and Minnesota (#16) are known for the punishment they subject their opponents to.

In the end, Angel City left with the win, 281-144, after carefully controlling most of the game and using the stickiness of their blocking to full advantage.
