MALMO, SWEDEN – After a nail-biting tournament-entry game against London that left many people marveling at the upwards trajectory of Rainy City, the quality of play for this game looked like it might belie the exit placing the two teams were aiming for. Charm City has had less luck at this tournament, but similar game history with a loss to Helsinki.

In the end, as has been the trend with this tournament, the seedings won out. Rainy City claimed an emphatic win against Charm City with a score of 258-78.

MALMÖ, SWEDEN – #3 London Rollergirls had two of the most anticipated games of the weekend. Saturday morning, London barely edged past a hungry #6 Rainy City team, to earn their spot to play against #2 Denver Roller Derby that evening. Meanwhile, Denver handled #7 Stockholm Saturday morning to punch their ticket to Champs and get a shot at a number one seed in Philadelphia.

What eventuated was far closer and more of a battle than the final score of 214-102 might imply, with Scald Eagle taking on the most points jamming for her new Colorado team against the London slow grinding churning tripods of London. What some people have overlooked is that Scald Eagle is not the only Rose City transplant on the Denver team and that last year’s Champs MVP, Brawn Swanson, is a bonus to the Denver defensive line and was part of the closer for London’s fate.

MALMÖ, SWEDEN – #5 seed Helsinki beat #11 Calgary in a true-to-seedings final score of 365-107, and while the Finnish team hadn’t had as far geographically to come to be at the tournament, the two teams have had similar histories of play across the last few seasons to bring them to this weekend.

The Europeans decided they weren’t about to let Calgary take any quarter, and they sealed the game by the halftime, pulling out a 131 point differential, and closing in the same vein.

MALMÖ, SWEDEN – With the added oomph of Scald Eagle under their wings, Denver is a team to beat this playoff weekend. Despite their best efforts to topple the soaring team, Stockholm was unable to take the wind out from under them. Denver came out of this second game for Saturday with a solid win, 330-152.

MALMÖ, SWEDEN – Given the infamous unbeaten track record of Gotham, Detroit couldn’t be said to have entered this game anticipating a win. Since the seedings had held true through the first half of the day, certainly all eyes were on the New York team to take the final win of the day.

What wound up happening was play held firmly in the hands of the Gotham Girls, as they finished up the game with over 400 points more than Detroit, after they played for points (since every game counts towards rankings for each season), ending up with 457-54.
