After weeks of speculation of which Men’s Roller Derby Association (MRDA) teams were going to be included in the governing body’s post-season tournament, the ten entrants, and their respective seeds, were finally revealed.

The MRDA 2016 Championships, “LoneStar Showdown,” takes place October 15-16 in North Richland Hills, Texas. The bracketed tournament, similar to last year’s configuration, launches with a pair of play-in games that precedes a quarterfinal round.

The seeds were based upon the most-recent MRDA rankings. Defending champions GateKeepers Roller Derby (9-0) earns the top seed, and last year’s silver medalists Your Mom Men’s Roller Derby (3-0) is seeded second. 2015 bronze medalists Texas Men’s Roller Derby (8-1) claims the third seed while fourth-seeded Bridgetown Menace (4-2) surged late in the season with its August victory over New York Shock Exchange, who also went 4-2 this season and is seeded fifth.

Perennial entrant Puget Sound Outcasts (4-3) claim the sixth seed while London, United Kingdom’s Southern Discomfort (4-0) makes its third straight MRDA post-season appearance with the seventh seed. Magic City (2-2) notched its second consecutive tourney trip by securing the eighth.

This year’s bracket sees San Diego (2-3) make a return trip to post-season play by claiming the ninth seed and the MRDA Championships has its first-ever Canadian entrant as Vancouver Murder (6-0) snares the tenth seed.

In Saturday’s bracket configuration, a morning quarterfinal play-in between #7 Southern Discomfort and #10 Vancouver takes place with the winner facing #2 YMMD later that afternoon while the #8 Magic City vs. #9 San Diego victor challenges the top-seeded GateKeepers Saturday night. The winners of these quarterfinal games advance to Sunday morning’s semifinal round while the ones that suffer defeat will have concluded their tournament.

As was with last year’s configuration of no true consolation bracket, this presents the possible scenario of the top two seeds being eliminated entirely from weekend play if it loses its lone Saturday game.

The pair of teams that fell in the Saturday quarterfinal play-in games between Southern Discomfort vs. Vancouver and Magic City vs. San Diego, will meet in a Sunday consolation contest.

The winners of these respective games advance to Sunday’s semifinals while the defeated teams play against each other in a Sunday consolation game.

Following Sunday morning’s semifinal round, the aforementioned consolation games takes place. The third-place game precedes the MRDA 2016 Championships finale Sunday night.
