DETROIT, MI – Sunday’s noon match-up pitted #3 seed Emerald City against #8 Sac City, as both teams gathered on the track to face off in the battle for 7th place in the weekend’s tournament. Both competitors arrived to the game with one win and two losses apiece. Emerald City surely held out hope to redeem themselves after losing out to two lower-seeded teams earlier in the weekend, yet despite their efforts, they did not capitalize upon power jam opportunities in the same way Sac City managed to do, ultimately bringing home an 8th place finish after Sac City sealed the score at 199-184.

Perhaps prophetically, the first jam of the bout saw each squad’s top scorer facing off on the starting line: Emerald City’s Ogden, who scored a total of 51 points this game, against Sac City’s Aleithal Weapon, who claimed a whopping 125 points for her team (well over half their total score). After an early track cut in the first jam by Ogden, Aleitha was able to rack up a quick 15 points, setting the tone for what was to follow.
Emerald City jammers Wonder Dread and Spunkee Bruizer were able to stem the bleeding in jams 2 and 3; while the Emerald City blockers held opposing jammers Anomie of the State and Addy Kontrol scoreless, Emerald City’s score nudged back up. With a late call-off in jam 4 by Aleithal Weapon, rival jammer Psychotic Rage was able to break out from the pack hot on her heels and bump Emerald City’s score to 17 points. As they were within reach of Sac City’s 18, it was Emerald City’s turn to suffer 4 scoreless jams. Sac City got lead a handful of jams in a row, and thanks to a penalty by Ogden, Aleithal Weapon more than doubled her opponents’ score, ending jam 7 at 43-17, Sac City.

This pattern remained fairly consistent throughout the first half: teams earned lead jammer at a nearly even rate, and both sides saw their fair share of penalties by both blockers and jammers. However, for the most part, it was Sac City that really used these opportunities to their advantage — that is, up until just before halftime, when Emerald City managed to even out the score with assistance from their blockers (notably some excellent offensive blocking by Neel), entering halftime at 92-92.
Early on in the second half, the teams slowly chipped away at each other until jam 5 when Wonder Dread took lead status and also swung the score in Emerald City’s favor, 105-104. Her teammates Psychotic Rage and Ogden continued to open up the lead, but as exhaustion set in, they just could not keep up the pace against Sac City’s Aleithal Weapon. A very worn-out Spunkee Bruizer could not put up any points on the board during a power jam following a track cut by Aleithal. This was Spunkee’s second rostered bout of the weekend, having played in their first game of the tournament but sitting out the next two. She put up 35 points as a part of the regular jammer rotation today, and it was her 19-point jam that helped tie it up at the half.

Emerald City stayed tight in the game, and after two penalties against Sac City jammer Addy Kontrol in the penultimate jam, it seemed possible that they could still pull out ahead. A star pass to Aleithal Weapon in the last moments of play however sealed the deal for Sac City, finishing 199-184.
While many of both teams’ stats match up very closely, 7 Sac City jammer penalties to Emerald City’s 8; Sac’s 51% lead jammer status to Emerald’s 49%, it appears the victor was able to use their power jam opportunities and capitalize on scenarios with fewer opposing blockers on the track (as has been a pattern this weekend, there were plenty of folks in penalty trouble this afternoon). Sac City’s 3-jammer rotation of Aleithal Weapon, Addy Kontrol, and Anomie of the State – and most notably of the 3, Aleithal Weapon’s 125 total points – outscored and outlasted their competition on the track today. Sac City will return home with 7th place from this year’s D2 Detroit tournament, while Emerald City claims 8th place.
